Photo of the Week: Catherine Cloran

This week is a bit special – Photo of the Week this week is award winning!

An image taken in Centennial Park has won the Head On Photo Festival’s NSW Landscape Photography Prize and will be retained as part of the NSW Parliament permanent collection.

The winning image, taken by Sydney-based visual artist and photographer Catherine Cloran, was taken of a film set that was located in Centennial Park in 2014.

“My work draws inspiration from nature and the way it collides and co-exists with the urban culture of the city – raising questions about human connection to or separation from the natural world,” said Ms Cloran.

“I am a regular visitor to the Parklands and on this particular day the clouds and light were just right, making the photographically-printed gum trees on the fence glow. I wanted the photo to showcase the layering of what was ‘real’ and what was artificial – and I think this is was what attracted the attention of the judges.”

“This is the third year I have entered the competition and am very humbled to have won this year. As they say third time lucky!”

With four solo exhibitions, two in Hong Kong and two in Sydney, and many group exhibitions on her growing portfolio, Ms Cloran’s latest work will now be on permanent rotation display within the NSW Parliament.

It is the second year in a row an image taken in Centennial Park has won the NSW Landscape Photography Prize. Renowned Australian Photographer, Peter Solness, took out the prize for a second year in 2014 for his “Waterscape 2” image. You can see that image here.
