Get the Parklands in your pocket! The Centennial Parklands iPhone app is available to download right now from the Apple iTunes store. So, the question is, what will I get?

Whether you’re a regular visitor to Centennial Parklands, or just come once year, this app will help you make the most of your time.

Want to download the app right now? Follow this link to the iTunes store or search for ‘myParklands‘ on iTunes.

Top five app highlights

1. A customised Centennial Parklands map with GPS locator

We haven’t taken a short cut and used Google maps. We’ve created our own customised map, complete with all internal road names (such as Grand Drive, Parkes Drive), and names of precincts or spaces within park areas (such as Parade Grounds, Belvedere Amphitheatre, Brazilian Fields). This is particularly useful for sports players, picnickers, event and function visitors and people simply trying to explain how and where to meet a friend!

OUR ADDED BONUS FOR YOU: you can even filter the map to find such things as: “nearest public toilets”, “dog on-leash and off-leash zones”, “locations of sports fields” and much, much more.

Explore the Parklands with our app map – it even shows you where you are!

2. What’s On calendar with booking details

Want to know what is on in Centennial Parklands throughout the year? Our What’s On app calendar can be searched by date or by activity type. Want to know what’s on next Saturday? Use the handy calendar date picker. Want to know what’s coming up for kids in March? Use the activity type filter and choose ‘kids’. All events have descriptions, dates, times, booking details.

Our What’s On calendar automatically syncs with our website – seamless updating!

3. Check your sports field status

Do you play sport on a turf sports field in Centennial Parklands? Cricket? Football? Rugby? Touch football? Whatever your sport, our Rangers do daily sports field checks to ensure the fields are OK to play. You can either continue to ring our Wet Weather Line on (02) 9339 6670 or use the app! Updates will be made before 7.15am every day, so if you are using the app, just check in after 7.15am to see whether your field is open to play!

OUR ADDED BONUS FOR YOU: One regular enquiry we receive is “Where is sports field XXXX?”. Centennial Parklands may be your home ground, or you may just come to play once a year. Either way, we’ve built in a great feature within the sports field status section of the app that will allow you to not only check that fields status, but also to locate exactly where that field is found in the Parklands on the map!

Let’s say you’re playing cricket on Field 20. Click ‘sports field status’ to see whether the field is Open or Closed. Then click the red icon on the right to zoom into the map to see the fields location.

I noticed there is a 99c download fee. Why is that?

That’s an easy one. This app has been designed to make your life more convenient, and give you access to information on demand. We want you to come and enjoy these Parklands. The reality, however, is that we are a self-funded public parklands. We provide a beautiful space for you to enjoy all year round, and by purchasing this app you are actually taking the first step in helping us maintain the Parklands!

We see 99c as a highly acceptable price for such convenience.

All profits from the sale of this app (once Apple takes their slice!) goes back into the Parklands management and maintenance. What it will achieve depends on how widely we can spread the word and how many downloads we can achieve.

At a minimum, we would like to cover much of the app’s development costs, and then put some money aside to begin work on creating an Android version of this app. If we manage to raise more money, then that additional money enters the pot that goes towards tree planting, toilet upgrades, pond restoration, heritage restoration and maintaining our sports fields.

So, you can help us in two direct ways:

  1. Download our app on your iPhone
  2. Tell a family member, friend, colleague, sports teammate, cycling colleague or fellow dog walker about the app

The more downloads, the better it is for the Parklands’ visitors and environment. It also helps us a lot to cut down on our print publications!

So, if you find this a great addition and assistance to your life, then don’t keep it to yourself – tell someone else!

Simple idea, big response: The Wish Tree

24 Jan

The Wish Tree header Simple idea, big response: The Wish Tree

The Light Garden in Centennial Park has surprised and delighted us all with the response it has received. That shouldn’t be the case. It should come as no surprise to anyone of the place that this Park has in the hearts and minds of the community. One aspect of the event, however, has evoked a truly astonishing response. The Wish Tree.

It started as a simple idea. Give people the freedom to express a wish – a personal wish and/or a wish for the Park. We could not have envisioned the response.

The insightful, the personal, the humourous, the cute, the intimate and the inspirational. This simple element of the event has connected with many.

We invite you to come and attach your wish, come and read others wishes, or come and just admire the physical sight of a community’s innermost thoughts out in the open for all to see.

The ‘wish attachment moment’ – this has been repeated over 2,000 times so far.

The tree becomes electric every evening – with lights and people.

It’s a moment between people…

…and a moment for personal reflection.

Every morning the ‘fruits’ of the previous nights wishes are clearly on display.

It is positivity…

The Wish Tree is also helping us plan and design the future of Centennial Park. It is the first stage in the development of the Centennial Park Master Plan. This is an exciting project we’ll be undertaking in 2013 – planning the future of this great Park, ensuring it remains relevant to the needs of the community, while retaining its historical character.

If you want to know more about this process, or be involved in further consultation projects, then subscribe to our eNewsletter to be alerted about future updates.

Happy birthday from Centennial Park…Colorado?

21 Jan

The Light Garden is underway and (despite some iffy weather) we’ve had some great crowds come along to wish Centennial Park a happy anniversary. However well-wishing hasn’t just come from visitors in person!

Late last week we were delighted to receive this great piece of video well-wishing. Staff from (the much cooler!) Centennial Park in Frederick, Colorado (USA) recorded a ‘Happy Birthday’ message for Centennial Park, Sydney. We were very touched!

It is indeed a small world after all…

Brilliant. Thanks guys!

By the way. if you’re intrigued, here’s some information on Frederick, Colorado.
