    Sports participation records tumble…again

Sydney’s busiest community sports venue has just smashed participation records for the recently completed winter season, with more than 330,000 people playing and training across Centennial Parklands!

Check out these numbers:

  • 35 turf sports fields across Centennial Parklands
  • 22,743 hours of sports bookings
  • 187 sports clubs and associations booked our fields
  • 73 schools came weekly
  • 75 athletics carnivals held
  • 34% increase in sports participation over two years

Who said winter was a quiet time in the Parklands!

By the end of the winter sports season, our fields need a bit of repair time!

But 25,000 reasons to look forward to summer

After such a busy winter season, our sports fields require a bit of R&R – and you will notice the fields are taking a break and new turf is being laid. 25,000 sqm of new turf, to be exact.

What does 25,000 sqm look like?

A typical Olympic-size swimming pool is 1,250 sqm. So, we’re laying 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools of turf!

Every year we spend around $2 million maintaining sports fields which includes the annual sports field renovation program.

This year, though, is going to be an even bigger one for the community. In early 2016 we’ll also be opening a new synthetic sports field in Moore Park. Just this one project will provide a sports facility that more than 40,000 people a year will be able to enjoy.

This summer – come play!
